“It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end… because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing… this shadow. Even darkness must pass.”

Research Into Similar Products: Teaser/Character Posters

After a look at those Macbeth posters, I decided to narrow down my poster research to the 'Teaser' or 'Character' posters. These sorts of posters heavily rely on the 'less is more' factor so I'd need to make sure the simplicity makes a massive statement! I'll be looking at posters I've posted about before but analyzing them in a different light as well as new ones.

Macbeth Teaser posters:

I didn't see this teaser poster beforehand, but I adore the golden lighting and warm colours used, as well as the fact Macbeth is looking away. But I wonder how it'd look if he was giving direct address to the audience instead; would that captivate the audience even more to watch it or would this looking away add more mystery?

I looked at this poster in my previous post; again I love the colour symbolism within correlation to the story. The symbolism of white (purity) is rather ironic when you think about the fact that this whole story happened because of Lady Macbeth's ambitions (or was it by the fact that Macbeth wasn't 'man enough' to say no?) The use of lighting in contrast to the darkness like the poster below gives it a soft effect; whereas in the one below, the lighting looks more 'striking' and piercing...

Here I like the 'left third' element of the poster; the sense of 'either or' with Macbeth on the left and the text on the right. Not only does it show a sense of motion in the poster (which correlates well to the frequent use of slow motion in the trailer) but could emulate the scales of justice; which direction would he go? Not right, that's for sure.

Again, this simple character photo shows nothing BUT the character of Lady Macbeth; in her vulnerable state rather than the 'crazy' 'powerful' woman we're all used to seeing her as. I love how this film removes the stereotypes of these characters and puts in 'humans' we could all relate to who just make some stupid decisions (but not entirely stupid; because it does work out for a while! They just forgot that they weren't heartless killers but had a conscience underneath it all... And that message shows through so vividly through this poster.)

Suffragette Teaser posters:

These three teaser posters for 'Suffragette' are ever so effective in the idea that it's like a photograph capturing the action of how it probably was. The drama and emotion simply shown through by the faces of these women as well as whats been done to them; all in contrast to the gold symbol at the bottom; reminding us of the reason why they went to the levels of rebellion they have.

The Crucible (theatre production poster)

I remember going to see this theatre production; and it was simply incredible! And the high intensity is cleary reflected through the photography and the posters. Though the image on the right isn't an actual poster, it was part of the principal photography of the show so did have the chance of being used for posters (and would've been a beautiful poster picture). But I know it's a poster for a theatre production but it still runs with the same appeal as usual 'teaser posters' for movies. There's the protagonist in isolation, a simple house style in terms of colour and the contrast of light and dark is used beautifully.

Southpaw Teaser Poster

I just happened to come across this poster, but I love the grittiness of it as well as the title being flipped to the far right; as if the protagonist is looking right over his nose at it. The little line 'Believe In Hope' in it's poetic tone sort of contradicts with the masculinity of the image. I love the drama with the blood dripping down his body and the tattoo on the right side of his chest too, all against the black background, it gives it an intense, moody atmosphere.

Dark Knight Rises - Joker poster

This poster is so amazing; just the simplicity and I could imagine the fans going mad over the fact you can't exactly see the Joker but you see just enough to really tease them! The way the hands and text are only in focus, and the Joker's typical phrase 'Why so serious?' with that bloody smile, mimicking his own. It's such a striking poster and I'll definitely want to make sure my poster will be powerful in it's own way.

Mockingjay Part 2 Teaser Posters:

These posters are just SO AMAZING! You don't have the typical Mockinjay logo, but that shows how well known it's become; that it can afford to do these quirky 'story as part of reality' things such as an almost 'propaganda' for the District 13 to unite and stand up against Capitol! The single close ups of each character with that striking mockingjay war paint on their faces is so effective; it all binds together so well with the context of the final film as well as intriguing the audience.

Jessabelle Poster

This poster is so intriguing in it's freakishness and weirdness. The light one one side with the darkness on the other showing the contrasts of each character. Even thought the movie itself in it's trailer seems like a cliche horror film, this poster makes it seem so much more interesting! The concept is so creepy and cool; tying both characters together just by twiling the hair around their neck, as if they're a part of each other... This can be a very intriguing idea, since Senara wishes to be human, but is inevitably a succubus.

Looking at all these teaser/character posters has highly inspired me to design attempts of my own teaser poster. Yet since I'll most likely be doing a teaser trailer, I wonder if I should balance that out and do a theatrical release poster instead; so that there's SOMETHING which displays a story-arch of the film... or shall I just match the teaser trailer with a teaser poster? I'll see how the filming goes first before thinking too much into the other products which'll reside beside it.
