Today I did do some filming, but I'll save that for another post. When i got home from filming today, I returned to watching some more interviews of Gary Oldman, and thought about the film 'Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy' which is a film which I never watched yet, but had some of my most favourite actors in it (including the Mr Oldman himself!) so I thought to check out the trailer.
And isn't it just so dramatic!

"We're not so very different, you and I.
We're both looking for the weaknesses in one another."

I suppose one of the main things about this trailer that I love (beyond the amazing actors that're in it) is the pace, what they show without making anything too obvious, and the music!
For instance...
I love the use of why the title's relevant to the film when matching each member of the team to each name... This made that 'ahhh, right... clever' moment in the trailer

I personally love the cut aways to the different reactions, as well as the man smoking the pipe near the end; that smoke adds so much of a sort of 'relaxed drama' to the scene.
Straight after this part, there's a series of straight cuts of what Benedict's character is doing; I love the wide shots/establishing shots of his surroundings, then inside the library and showing what he's doing; sort of like telling the story of 'who. where, what'. The use of colour with the red 'X' on the book also shows a driving plot force in the story, as well as making Benedict reaction obvious.
Also, as soon as Benedict's character was shown, this kick-started the 'action', 'thriller' sequence of the trailer with the fast violin non-diegetic music.
The beautiful Tom Hardy had a rather heavy role in this trailer, it seemed. The big names throughout this trailer though; Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy would've got the fans (like me) flooding through... except I didn't flood through the doors unfortunately...
I do love the caption 'The Classic That Redefined The Spy Thriller' along with the next stage of the plot twist 'She told me a secret. The mother of all secrets'. The speed of the cuts to various subjects; the characters, then a recorder, then an over shoulder shoulder shot really builds up the trailer to it's climax.
Then, finally the complete switch in music in these two parts: seeing the dead body, starting that 'screeching' of the violins up until starting the dramatic violin music again after the close up of Gary Oldman, signifying the climax of the trailer...

I find this final bit of dialogue within the trailer from Gary Oldman very significant to some of the cuts shown within this last series of shots...
For example, many of the characters look isolated and vulnerable-but also powerful to a sense- like with Tom Hardy's character's weakness of the woman etc. This other form of story-telling shows so much about the characters at hand and perhaps their personal stories.
The final aspect I love the most about this trailer is the music at the end... It leaves the audience in the palm of their hands and the simple yet bold, bouncing sound is such a contrast to the fast, dramatic violin music it's amazing! It could almost replicate the sound of a ricocheting bullet.
