It's either the choice of showing a piece of a potentially massive awesome film (trailer) or to have a little film in it's entirety which could make the audience happy, moved or inspired! A music video could show a short story as well as the short film (except, you'll need lip syncing in a music video.)
When I think of a short film, I think of cute little animations they sometimes show in cinemas before the main film. For example, Pixar's animation 'The Blue Umbrella' or Walt Disney's short animation 'Paperman' (there's a clip of them below)
(The music in the 'Paperman' vid isn't the original music for copyright purposes, but it's close enough!)
These sort of short films have a way of touching the audience's heart and have great impact, since, they need to leave a lasting impression because its short and could be easily forgotten.
For a music video it could be a great opportunity to tell a short story. A unique example of a music video which shows artistic animation skills too is a video called 'Thought of You' by Ryan Woodward:
You see the suffering of a man who longs for his loved one to return to him, but what actually happened between them can be interpreted by the audience; but it's still really sweet... and sad. I know the examples I shown have animation rather than Live Action, but it's because quite a lot of animated videos have the most poignant stories. But I'll be filming Live Action; not only to show my camera skills (which I need to show) but also because I cant animate.
For a music video, I have plenty of songs in mind, one of them being a song by 'Priscilla Hernandez' called 'The Underliving' (the song is below here) which I could also use for the trailer, since the mood of the song is mysterious and gloomy and reminds me of something dark and magical.
But I love the idea of a movie trailer too; because you can make the story as big and awesome as you want and only select particular parts to show the audience to make them go 'OHH! I WANNA SEE THAT!' which is always fun!
The song evokes so much imagery and I just love the movement of the song and character behind the voice and lyrics. But I know I can only have about 15 seconds of a copyrighted song in the trailer. I'll have to pick the part of the song wisely.
Initial ideas for a trailer is that I want to have some scenes in a forest, and I don't want it to be like anyone else's. I don't want to take the easy option. If the story means make-up and costume, then I'll want to provide that. Something high fantasy yet because there's certain things I cannot achieve, because of money and lack of skills or equipment, it can't be too 'out of this world' so finding a nice forest to film in will be great, and I could use props and actors dressed in interesting clothing to give a 'fantastical' effect. A masquerade ball comes to mind with some sort of dark, spiritual secret or something. But of course, a story still needs developing. These are all just a few ideas so far, but I've got tonnes more in mind... This shall be the start of a perilous, exciting journey....
