Priscilla Hernandez: The Underliving
Ideas it gave me (main idea for trailer): It gave me the ideas of something theatrical, with A Midsummer Night's Dream sort of setting; a magical forest with unusual things going on. In this case I thought of someone (either a protagonist or simply the audience through the camera) venturing through a forest in which there's a row of people either side of the forest path, holding lanterns (something as rustic as a light bulb on a piece of string attached to a branch each!), lighting the way into the forest until you reach an open space in which there's a sort of masquerade ball. The camera perhaps (in the point of view with the protagonist) is swept into the dance until he/she's faced with the queen. Or maybe there's a large campfire with a group of women (maybe witches!) trying to spellbind the protagonist (more of a music video idea maybe). I know these ideas may sound odd but it looks much better in my head than written down like this.
This idea brought me to 'okay, who is this 'queen' character? Why is this forest world here? I dont tend to like stories in which an unassuming protagonist finds themself thrown into a crazy situation, so is the Queen the protagonist actually, or if there's an 'every-man/girl' main, then why are they here? I was inspired by a make-up artist called Klair de Lys (I'll do a separate blog post on her later) and she done make-up ideas based on each of the 7 deadly sins. Perhaps this 'Queen' character used to be great, until she turned a dark route, and served herself rather than others, falling from her reign and becoming nothing but a wretched woman who hides from the world (or maybe she's a beggar). The 'every-man/girl' character may find the wretched woman and finds out her story.
YET, though this is a fantasy idea, there has to be some sort of logic. Where on earth did the Queen's kingdom come from? Yes, it's a pretty forest area, but there has to be more to it than 'yeh, just deal with it, the magical forest with a queen person exists'. Maybe this wretched woman only imagined this world, thinking she was something great, then someone gave her a hard time and she woke up, realising she was someone she wasn't. Or maybe this 'every-man/girl' character, like Alice In Wonderland, thought up this magical place, and the fallen queen could be like the Queen of Hearts.
Oh the possibilities are endless! But that's one crazy idea I plucked from the air from this song.
Sleepthief: Tenuous
Ideas it gave me: It has a similar morbid, sad movement as some parts of 'The Underliving'. It, again, gives an 'other worldly', 'spiritual', 'ghostly' atmosphere. The lyrics tell the story of a woman's lover having 'the call' to go off to sea, and after a while (maybe years) of him being away, she finds he died, or she has visions of him returning to her. This sad romantic element could be used for my trailer; I adore romances, and most stories I imagine have some sort of romantic element involved, either that or I try to make it deep and inspiring.
Phildel: Storm Song
Ideas it gave me: This song reminded me, like Sleepthief's song, of a woman whose lover went off to sea to some dangerous place and she wants to call him back or find him. I could imagine it based on a beach, in which the girl has a cute, rustic beach home where her and her loved one used to live... until he left her that is! I love the build up of the song, as if resembling the gradual build up of a storm. I'd imagine it be easier to make a music video with this song, but in terms of linking this song with my main narrative idea, it could signal something romantic again. Could my trailer be something potentially romantic or just a 'finding ones-self' sort of story? Who knows! But it's fun thinking these ideas up!
Jonsi: Tornado
Ideas it gave me: This song is gorgeous, about unleashing the power and potential within you, though you fear it may destroy others or even yourself. Again, I just love the movement of the music, and with a lot of these songs, it's quite hard to hear what the singer's saying, (or at least, sometimes the lyrics are just pure poetry which can have multiple interpretations) in doing so making their voice merely one with the other instruments in the song, telling the story through the sound, allowing the audience to put their own spin on what the song means, opening their imagination. This song could be lovely in moving on the trailer in an emotional moment, or if it's used in an 'action packed' scene, it could suggest some subtext to whats happening on the surface. But though this song is the least likely to be used in the trailer, I still find it inspiring to listen to.
